How to Report Cyber Crime in India: Portal, Helplines and Recovery Steps

With the rise of UPI fraud, digital arrest scams, phishing, and identity theft, knowing the exact protocol to report cyber crime in India is critical. Immediate reporting within the 'Golden Hour' can help freeze lost funds before fraudsters withdraw them.

1. What is the Cyber Crime 'Golden Hour'?

The "Golden Hour" refers to the first 2 to 6 hours immediately after a financial cyber fraud occurs.

  • During this window, the stolen funds are typically being transferred across multiple intermediary bank accounts before being withdrawn at an ATM or converted to cryptocurrency.
  • If you report the transaction within this period, banks and payment processors can initiate an automatic transaction freeze under the Cyber Safe initiative, raising your chances of recovering the money.

2. Reporting via the National Helpline (1930)

The National Cyber Crime Helpline is the quickest way to freeze stolen financial transactions.

  • Dial 1930 immediately from your registered mobile number.
  • Provide the operator with:

* Your name and contact details.

* Bank Name / UPI App used (e.g., SBI, PhonePe).

* Transaction ID / UTR Number.

* Amount lost and exact time of transaction.

  • The operator logs the complaint in the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) system, which sends an alert to the beneficiary bank to freeze the corresponding funds.
  • You will receive an SMS containing a temporary login ID and a link to complete the portal registration within 24 hours.

3. Filing an Online Complaint on cybercrime.gov.in

If you missed calling 1930 or experienced non-financial cyber crime (such as social media hacking, online harassment, or identity theft), you must file a report on the official website.

* Report Women/Child Related Crime: For complaints involving online harassment, cyberbullying, or sharing of non-consensual images. Anonymous reporting is available.

* Report Other Cyber Crime: For financial frauds, ransomware, phishing, hacking, and online scams.

  • Step-by-Step Portal Filing:

1. Click on 'Report Other Cyber Crime' and register using your mobile number and email.

2. Input details of the incident (category, date, platform used).

3. Upload screenshots of the transaction, chat messages, email headers, or profile URLs of the fraudster.

4. Provide details of the victim and submit the complaint. Download the PDF copy for your records.

4. Required Evidence Checklist

To ensure your cyber crime complaint is actionable, compile the following evidence:

  • For Financial Fraud: Bank statement showing the debit (highlighted), SMS alerts received, screenshots of UPI transaction success windows, and UTR numbers.
  • For Hacking / Account Takeover: Screenshots of emails showing unauthorized login attempts, links to the hacked profile, and messages sent by the hacker to contacts.
  • For Cyberbullying / Phishing: Full headers of phishing emails, screenshots of threats showing usernames and timestamps, and caller details (if using VoIP or international numbers).

5. What Happens After Filing a Complaint?

  • Verification: The cyber police verify the transaction details and link them with the beneficiary banks.
  • FIR Registration: If the value of the fraud is significant, the complaint is forwarded to your local police station to register a First Information Report (FIR) under the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
  • Escalation: You will receive periodic updates via SMS. You can also trace the status of your complaint on the portal using the login credentials.
