QR Code Scam
QR code scams exploit the misconception that scanning a code can 'receive' money. In reality, every QR scan followed by entering your UPI PIN authorizes an outgoing payment — never an incoming one.
What Is It
A scam where fraudsters send a QR code disguised as a 'payment receipt' link, tricking the victim into scanning it and entering their UPI PIN, which actually debits their account.
When To Use It
Report immediately after money is debited from your account following a QR code scan, especially in response to an OLX/Facebook Marketplace sale or an unsolicited link.
Step-by-Step Process
- 1Call 1930 immediately to request a transaction freeze at the receiving bank.
- 2File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in under 'Report Financial Fraud' with the transaction ID/UTR.
- 3Call your bank to block your UPI ID/app and report the fraudulent debit.
- 4Preserve the QR code image and chat/message that led to the scan.
- 5Follow up within 7 days and escalate to the Banking Ombudsman if unresolved after 30 days.
Documents Required
- Screenshot of the QR code and message received
- Transaction ID/UTR number
- Bank statement showing the debit
- Registered mobile number linked to UPI
Fees
Free to file at cybercrime.gov.in or via the 1930 helpline.
Processing Time
Freeze requests are actioned within hours if reported early; full investigation can take 30–90 days.
Important Tips
- Remember: scanning a QR code always sends money, it never receives it.
- Never enter your UPI PIN unless you are the one making a payment.
- Verify with your bank directly if you ever receive a 'payment link' claiming to credit your account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Scanning alone typically just opens a payment screen; the money is debited only after you enter your UPI PIN, so never complete that step for an unknown 'receive money' request.
